Today, the cue "Hey Siri" is frequently the quickest method to open Siri on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and HomePod. Apple is now attempting to simplify the procedure.
The business is working on removing the "Hey" from the trigger phrase so that users only have to say "Siri"—along with a command. While this may appear to be a little modification, it is a technological problem that necessitates extensive AI training and underlying engineering development.
Apple has been working on the update for some months and, if everything goes well, plans to implement it next year or the year following. The corporation has been testing the streamlined wake word on staff and gathering training data.
Siri's complexity comes from her ability to grasp the sole term "Siri" in a variety of accents and dialects. The presence of two words—"Hey Siri"—increases the likelihood of the system correctly detecting the signal.
Apple has also been working on new features. It will integrate the voice assistant more deeply into third-party apps and services, as well as improve its capacity to understand users and take appropriate action.
It's no secret that, while Siri has improved over the years, the system can still frequently misinterpret users or execute the incorrect action on a request. The rate of advancement has not always kept up with the competition.
If the switch from "Hey Siri" to "Siri" is effective, it will match Amazon.com Inc.'s Alexa, which requires users to say "Alexa" rather than "Hey Alexa." Google requires the wake word "OK Google" or "Hey Google," but is trying to allow users to make follow-up queries without having to repeat the wake phrase.
Apple would speed up back-to-back inquiries by deleting the "Hey" from "Hey Siri." Other changes to Siri have also been made by the firm, including the revamp of the UI on the Apple TV as part of tvOS 16.1.
Microsoft Corp. made a similar change before retiring its own speech assistant, Cortana. In 2018, Microsoft changed the wake phrases on smart speakers from "Hey Cortana" to just "Cortana."
An even better change, in my opinion, would be Apple allowing consumers to pick which device they want to trigger through voice. Let me play the world's smallest violin for Apple device customers, but the company should actually allow consumers to decide whether they want to trigger their iPhone, iPad, or HomePod for Siri.
