iPhone 14 crash detection feature reportedly dials 911 from roller coasters

Following allegations that the devices have been dialing 911 from roller coasters, it appears that the new crash detection technology on the Apple iPhone 14 is detecting more than just road incidents.

Since the iPhone 14's debut in mid-September, The Wall Street Journal claimed that rollercoaster passengers at Cincinnati's Kings Island amusement park had made at least six crash-detection calls.

There have apparently been other erroneous notifications made by roller coaster riders at Six Flags Great America in the Chicago region.

According to Apple's website, if the iPhone 14 senses a serious auto accident, it will display a warning and, unless the user rejects it, will automatically contact 911 after 20 seconds.

The phone will play an audio message for emergency services if the user is not responding, alerting them to the severity of the crash and giving them the user's latitude and longitude as well as a rough search radius.

According to Apple, customers may disable notifications and automated emergency calls by accessing the settings on their phone, selecting Emergency SOS, and then turning off Call After Severe Crash.
